Tips for Cooking Gluten-Free at Home

Pear TartCooking from scratch at home is not an easy task. It’s difficult to make sure you have all of the ingredients when you go to the kitchen to make your foods. When you’re cooking gluten-free at home it’s even more of a challenge. It takes two or three times as many ingredients to make the foods you’re able to eat and it may take twice as long to get the job done. If you find yourself in this situation you need to look for ways to make it easier or you may find yourself leaning towards the wrong foods just to get you through. That’s not what you want or need, so you must make it work.

One of the best solutions is to keep it simple. No matter if you’re just starting out or if you’ve been eating gluten-free for a while, but have a busy schedule, the more simple meals you can make, the better of you’ll be. Now simple doesn’t mean you need to lax on the foods you need to eat to stay healthy and in control of your issues, but it does mean you need to eat right. Simple usually means eating whole foods. These would include fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh meat like chicken or fish, whole eggs, plain cheese, and some dairy products to name a few.

Make sure when you make your purchases you read the labels before you leave. There is nothing worse than to spend the money on a food item and later find out it contains gluten and you can’t eat it. Most food items can’t be returned so that’s money down the drain. That also means you must go back to the store for the items that are gluten-free or you might have to change your meal plans if they don’t offer what you need.

While it may take a little more time, planning ahead and preventing cross contamination is a must when you’re eating gluten-free foods. It’s important to use the extra dishes you need or take the time to wipe off the counter before any of your gluten-free products come in contact with it. This will prevent you from needing to dispose of foods because they came in contact with something you can’t have to eat.

One of the things that’s sure to help out, maybe more than anything else would be a cookbook. There are cookbooks you can buy at the bookstore or online at Amazon that’ll help you make gluten-free foods you’ll be able to make. You’ll also have the ability to find a number of different recipes which will help with the need for a little variety in your meal list.

When you’re cooking gluten-free at home you may run across several problems along the way, but if you use these tips and others you may run across down the line you’re sure to have meals your family will want to eat and it won’t take you hours and hours to complete them each night.
